Walk 4 Hospice
Congratulations to Haley Whitt, Montgomery Hospice supporter who was honored with one of
the 2009 Prudential Spirit of Community Award for middle school volunteers. Haley, her brother Brian
and other members of their community organized a walk to raise money for Casey House.
They held a second walk on September 13, 2009. More information.

Cheri Sanford wins award
Cheri Sanford, Admissions Coordinator for Montgomery Hospice was awarded a
"2008 You Make a Difference Award" from the Hospice & Palliative Care Network of Maryland.
Cheri has worked as a hospice nurse for 25 years, and states
"It is a privilege to do hospice work. I wouldn't want to do anything else."
Ann Mitchell praised Cheri in her nomination letter, saying "Cheri is exceptionally
gifted in her role for several reasons: her extraordinary memory for clinical and
demographic data about patients; her excellent knowledge of hospice; her calm, steady
demeanor on the phone and in the office; and her superior knowledge of the computerized
medical record system. "
Montgomery Hospice in AARP article on hospice
The January 16, 2009 AARP Bulletin Today has an informative article about
hospice entitled "Hospice Polishes Its Image." It includes the story of a Montgomery Hospice patient using the following
words:
"Within days, a team of doctors, nurses and home aides from Montgomery Hospice began providing
medical, emotional and practical home-based care and support for Eleanor Browning and her
family right up through her peaceful death.
The Brownings' experience illustrates the hospice concept at its best—a joint venture between family and an interdisciplinary team of medical professionals."

Montgomery Hospice Riderwood volunteers
The Montgomery Hospice volunteer knitters who live in the Riderwood community were highlighted in a story in the December 2008 issue of the Erickson Tribune.
"Proving that the selfless acts of a few can help many, Riderwood Hospice Knitters have volunteered more than 1,250 hours creating shawls for hospice patients and their caregivers at the Casey House, an inpatient facility of Montgomery Hospice."

On August 1, 2008, Blanche Ventura and Sharon Cline were named the News4 Morning Persons.
"Blanche Ventura and Sharon Cline dedicate their days to helping others.
They work for the Hospice at Home program for Montgomery Hospice. Their days start at 7:30 a.m.,
when they start collecting updates, coordinating the work of the nurses, certified nursing assistants,
social workers and chaplains, and working with the partners that provide medical equipment and medications.
Colleagues said the women are like jugglers,
supporting all the professionals, backing them up and never dropping a ball."

Montgomery Hospice in the News: Member Spotlight
The work of Montgomery Hospice was highlighted in the Center for Nonprofit Advancement's July/August newsletter, The Nonprofit Agenda.
"Last year, [Montgomery Hospice] worked with more than
1,400 hospice patients in Montgomery County
and touched more than 5,500 through bereavement
services. This dedicated team of doctors,
nurse practitioners, nurses, spiritual counselors,
social workers, certified nursing assistants,
bereavement counselors and volunteers
provides care in patient homes, extended care
facilities and Casey House, an acute care facility
operated by Montgomery Hospice."
